Preventing and Removing Tea Stains From Carpets

A white or plain colour carpet looks lovely. But it needs to be looked after.

Prevention

You can protect it from growing grey along the edges by regularly vacuum cleaning, and using an attachment to reach the edges.

Cotton or wool carpets sound superior. They might last longer, look better. But they might also be more vulnerable to stains. You need to know the fabric to tell the cleaners and for your own use when cleaning.

DIY Stain Removal

SUCCESS!

In July 2023 a tenant successfully removed tea stains from a white carpet using Vanish.

I had previously removed dark stains from a pink carpet using Dr Beckmann\s stain remover which has a handy applicator brush.

(The refill is cheaper and is the same container minus the brush.)

NO SUCCESS!

A chinese carpet had dark stains. Cause unknown. It could be soil from plant pots, or from shoes after jogging.

The stain remover had no effect. After several application, the dark brown stain was modified from dark brown to light brown but still visible. The yellow surrounding colour of the carpet had turned to white,m making the brown stain look even worse, more visible and contrasting.

DIY remedies are water. Or white wine for red wine stains.

I have found a spray on cleaner worked well on badly stained carpet. However, on a Chinese carpet, the stain remover removed the colour and left a paler patch.

You need to cover the surrounding area when spraying.

Concealment

If all else fails, use a rug or table or chair to cover the spot.

Or if all else fails, paint a design on top. Or remove a section from another area which is unseen, such as under a bookcase, and swap the two pieces. Or make a rug from leftover carpet which matches. When the carpet is laid stay on site. Rescue the extra pieces, the cut offs. You can use them inside the built in wardrobe (Americans say closet). Later, if needed, replace that part in the wardrobe and insert a square or neat piece over or instead of the stained piece.

How to finish a carpet edge? It can be done by machine by carpet shops offering this service, or by hand. You will need a large darning needle and patience and sew slowly and neatly, marking the edge to get even stitches.

Tea stains are unsightly. It can cost two hundred pounds or more to get a professional cleaner. It can cost thousands to replace a carpet.

Remember to act fast. You can dye clothes with tea in an hour. So you want to remove a stain immediately.. At quickly.

A wet dry vacuum cleaner is helpful.

First, mop up with white paper. What harm could water do - spread the stain or shrink the rug or carpet

. To prevent the stain spreading, Protect the carpet at the edge of the stain.

What harm could using a coloured towel do? Transfer .dye to the carpet.
